Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Grant & Fundraising Lead to build and guide Useful Arts’ fundraising efforts. This person will help design our development strategy, lead grant and donor initiatives, and establish the basic systems that will support growth over the next few years.
You will work directly with the Co-founder / CEO and have the opportunity to shape how a small, focused nonprofit at the intersection of arts and AI sustains its mission. Over time, this role may include mentoring junior volunteers who support grant research and fundraising operations.
This is ideal for someone with prior experience in nonprofit fundraising or development who wants to apply their skills to a new, timely mission around creative rights and AI transparency.
Key Responsibilities
Strategy and Planning

Develop an early-stage fundraising and development strategy for Useful Arts, including near-term priorities and longer-term goals

Identify the most promising funding pathways for our size and stage, such as grants, major donors, sponsorships, and online campaigns

Advise on basic infrastructure and tools for tracking prospects, deadlines, and donor relationships
Grant Development

Research, prioritize, and track grant opportunities from foundations, corporate philanthropy, and relevant public sources

Lead the drafting and refinement of grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and follow-up reports

Work with the Co-founder / CEO to shape clear, compelling language about Useful Arts’ programs and impact
Donor and Partner Development

Help identify and cultivate relationships with individual donors, creative industry partners, and AI or tech companies that align with our mission

Collaborate on donor communications such as updates, thank you messages, and simple impact reports

Provide guidance on early fundraising campaigns, including messaging and audience targeting
Collaboration and Leadership

Partner closely with the Co-founder / CEO to align fundraising efforts with program priorities (CAUD initiative, AI Tool Training Series, educational content, and storytelling)

Help define potential junior support roles and, if appropriate, mentor a volunteer assistant focused on grant research and drafting

Contribute to a culture of transparency, ethical practice, and respect for creative communities
Qualifications

At least 3–5 years of experience in nonprofit fundraising and grant writing

Demonstrated success in securing grants or gifts from foundations, corporations, or major donors

Strong writing, editing, and persuasive communication skills

Comfort working with budgets, basic metrics, and reporting requirements

Ability to manage multiple prospects and deadlines in a structured way

Alignment with Useful Arts’ mission around creative rights, transparency in AI, and support for artists and creative workers

Familiarity with simple tracking tools or CRMs is helpful, but not required
Commitment & Benefits

Volunteer leadership role of approximately 5–10 hours per week
