Creative AI Usage Disclosure (CAUD)

A simple, standardized way to disclose how AI was used in creative work. Not a judgment, but a way to build trust and protect authorship. Because transparency builds trust, and trust is what the creative economy runs on.

Bringing the conversation to the global creative stage

An activation at Cannes Lions engaging creative leaders on AI and brand exposure to authorship, ethics, and accountability without losing creativity and productivity.

WHAT WE DO

Building digital "nutrition label" for creative work

When you read a food label, you don't need to understand biochemistry to know what's in what you're eating. CAUD works the same way. It gives audiences, platforms, clients, and collaborators a clear, readable (by humans and machines) signal about how human and/or AI were involved in creating a piece of work.

Right now, there is no standard way to communicate this. A film might be partly AI-generated. A song might have been composed with a tool trained on other artists' work. A brand image might be fully synthetic (and potentially unprotected). CAUD is the proposed standard that closes that gap.

Transparency in creative work isn't about policing how it's made. It's about giving people the information they need to engage with it honestly.

ERODED TRUST

Passing off AI-generated work as human-made breaks the trust that audiences, clients, and collaborators extend to creators.

AI can unlock new creative possibilities and real efficiency. But without transparency, three things happen: trust erodes when AI-generated work is passed off as human-made, genuinely human work gets drowned out in an abundance of undisclosed AI output, and creators lose legal ground they didn't know they had.

LOST VISIBILITY

Human-made work gets drowned out in an abundance of undisclosed AI output. Without a label, there is no signal to differentiate it.

Copyright protection is not automatically extended to AI-generated work. Without sufficient human creative contribution, that work is unprotected — and others can use it freely. A CAUD label is not just a transparency tool. It is a way to establish that a human was here.

UNPROTECTED WORK

Copyright is not automatically granted to AI-generated work. Without disclosure, others may assume your work is free to use without permission.

WHY DOES THIS MATTER

AI will change creative work. Disclosure is how we navigate that honestly and legally.

HOW IT WORKS

CAUD is a work in progress — intentionally.

The beta is live and we are actively gathering feedback to understand what the label communicates clearly and what gets in the way. The best version of CAUD will be simpler, more usable, and more credible than what exists today.

Getting there requires real input from creators, educators, technologists, and industry. We are not designing this from the top down — we are building it from the inside out, with the people who will actually use it.

The best disclosure standard is one creators choose to use — not one they are required to. That means it has to be simple, trustworthy, and genuinely useful.

If you want to help shape what CAUD becomes — as a tester, a feedback provider, or a potential partner — we want to hear from you.

Fields are being simplified based on ongoing feedback. The beta captures more than the final version will — we are narrowing, not expanding.

Who we speak with

Useful Arts continues to engage faculty and students at education institutions as well as creative and legal professionals to learn what they think works and what doesn't.

Help shape CAUD

We are looking for creators, technologists, educators, and potential design and technology (blockchain) partners to help build the next version.
